What creates cultural cohesion and the attraction of a counter culture?

Philosopher's reply

Dear John,

Love creates both. The need for human connection. Folks in the mainstream and folks in the counterculture might be at odds, but each groups exists in relation to the other. Without that connection, there is no counter-culture, just a different culture. A friend who is wiser than I once said that counterculture provides warmth, through friction.

That sounds right to me.

Art and philosophy are often related in their aspirations, and sometimes even in their means, but very few have practiced both with distinction like Iris Murdoch did. She made art that influenced philosophy and philosophy that influenced art. I'll never be an artist, no matter how much I write about art, but I draw inspiration from writers like her who were somehow able to thrive in both worlds.
